Documentary: Making Migration Safer, More Informed and Better Governed
In 2020, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN’s migration agency, contacted me to produce a cross-regional documentary. The task: to highlight the work of the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration.
The EU-IOM Joint Initiative is a collaboration between the UN, the EU, and 26 African countries, aimed at making migration safer, more informed and better governed. The program’s work includes search and rescue operations, sustainable reintegration of returning migrants, partnerships with state and non-state actors, capacity building, and strengthening migration governance.
For this documentary, we interviewed people in six African countries, including the migrants themselves, the communities they live in, local NGO’s working with IOM, local and national governments and EU and UN representatives. Over the course of four months, we worked with film crews in Niger, Ivory Coast, Sudan, Tunisia, Guinea and Ethiopia. Interested in learning more about how we work?
